About Us

History

My African Safari Camps is proud to introduce our latest addition Camp Khwai.

Born from a Mokotedi family dream that has been honed over the years by the duo of Ronnie Mokotedi and his wife Tlotlo. With over 22 years of running and managing camps, lodges, hotels, spas, guesthouses and travel, the duo founded My African Safari Camps in 2018, and Camp Khwai in 2021.

Camp Khwai was born from a bare, but magic land. Everyone thought the Mokotedi’s were crazy when they shared their vision of what will become the camp today. Theirs was a dream and they made it a reality, through sweat and plans that were inspired by not only their love for travel, but a passion for the industry they have been a part of in different spheres since 1998 when Ronnie began his Travel and Tourism studies in the USA.

The camp has been deliberately kept small and family oriented so that our guests can fully immerse themselves in nature with added touches of luxury, privacy and personalization. We share authentic African Safari experiences with the discerning traveller, through our classic style safaris and we believe in conserving Africa’s wilderness, which is the anchor of our camps.

Our experienced staff from our local communities who pride themselves on excellent hospitality. We cannot wait to welcome you and take care of you while you turn your adventure to memories to last a lieftime.

Answers To Frequent Questions

When Should I Go?

The great part about the Okavango is that the animals never leave - the sighting frequency just changes. In short anytime is a great time to visit so its up to you. The seasons do vary so bear in mind;

November - April is typically lower tourist volumes so higher availability. During this period the temperature reaches 40C in the day and 20C at night. There will be rain (mainly in December - February) but it is not all day and night for weeks on end. This period of the year is when the landscape is very green and typically sees the influx of birds from continents experiencing winter.

April-November sees temperatures drop and it can be as low as 0C at night (20-25C during the day). The landscape becomes dryer however the water from Angola fills up the Delta from May/June.

What Will I See?

The list is endless - just consider for now that there over 500 birds, 150 mammals, 85 fish and 1,500 plants. You will also see local people, an ever changing and vast landscape and hear rich enchanting sounds of wildlfe.

Opposite our main area we have seen a leopard stalking an impala, Setutungas, Buffalos, Hippos, Crocodiles, a sole Lion and Elephants just as an example.

Rarer to see is our night friends such as armadillo and honey badger.

General Travel Trips?

Travel Visa - most countries in Europe and Americas do not need a visa. Check the Botswana Government advice here - https://evisa.gov.bw/#/needvisa OR consult your travel advisor / airline.

Travelling with Children or Sole Parent - Botswana subscribes to international child protection initiatives. To that extent you will need to provide (in some instances at the departing country) a notarised unabridged birth certificate. If a sole parent on travel - additionally an affidavit (notarised letter) from the other parent agreeing to the trip including specific dates of departure and return. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

Currency & Payment - is in Botswana PULA. ATMs accept most cards for cash withdrawal. Camp tips can in Pula or US$ (presently P13.5=$1)

Travel Light - the light aircraft transfers to and from Camp are max 20kg in SOFT bags. Anymore than this could result in vast additional expense for separate transport. 20kg includes any additional luggage and equipment.

Drones - are not allowed unless a specific licence has been granted in Botswana (takes months).

About Health & Vaccination

Do consult your doctor in advance of travel.

Botswana requests yellow fever vaccination if you are arriving from or via a yellow zone.

Water - at our camp is safe to drink. We also encourage this to reduce PEP waste. Pre bottled water is also available.

Snakes & Stuff - there are few snake issues in Botswana. You are more likely to bump into if walking into deep bushy areas (which we dont allow). Your room is checked during twice daily housekeeping. Do remember to close the door zip to prevent other mobile creatures coming in.

Fitness - Safari is really not hard work. Even the walks are at a gentle pace. Do let us know if you have a back problem or other disabilities.

About Insurances

We recommend you obtain adequate travel & insurance for your personal items and health preservation.

Our property has vehicle passenger liability and public liability cover.
